Results - DOTA Stage Match

The first match for MCC today in their pool play for the DOTA competition here at the Asian Championship was a stage match, one which gathered a huge crowd of supporters and spectators. Their first match was against the Indian team who provided them with little challenge as their brood mother led strategy dominated the indians and gave them a fantastic victory in front of the huge live audiance. A triumph for New Zealand gaming indeed. All of the lads performed incredibly well and are looking forward to their matches later on tonight. We do have a stage match video which is a fantastic watch and will be uploaded the minute we get back to New Zealand. in the meantime enjoy these shots of the boys in action.

The opening ceremony for the 2008 WCG Asian Championship has just finished, and what an event it was, incorperating members from each of the 14 competing nations in the proceedings. The ceremony began following the prizegiving for the Singapore National Finals which rewarded the best of its players with a chance to compete in the coming weekends event. To begin distinguished guests from all of the major sponsers of the event including Samsung and Microsoft gave  small prepared speech about what the WCG has become and how it brings players together in the spirit of healthy competition and friendship. Following that the flag bearers from the 14 nations were bought onto the stage and their national flags planted. Wugga held the honor of bearing the New Zealand flag and reciting the gamers oath of fairplay thereby reaffirming their nations commitment to the notion of balanced and friendly competition. following that the ceremony came to an explosive close and the eblacks began to think about their games tomorrow.

Friday Afternoon Update

This afternoon proved to be an exciting one so far with the exibition hall buzzing with people and excitment with all the major sponsers setting up some impressive stands as well as many other vendors and organisations turning out to show the international guests the best Singapore has to offer. Let me tell you they are impressive. Samsung has shown up in force as well as other major companies to show off their latest toys and gadgets some of which are amazingly cool. Keep a lookout for our walkaround some of the stands appearing later on tonight for a look at some of the new gear out there. The New Zealand team all had to be present for media interviews and were all submited to a barrage of questions by various other media from countries all accross the asia pacific region. After the interviews however the team split up to go their various ways. The DOTA boys all went out to eat and are off investigating Singapore til the Opening Ceremony tonight at 6pm. Wugga is practising bearing the New Zealand flag for tonights festivities as he has been chosen as New Zealands flag bearer, a huge honor. Massi4h is busy impressing the crowds over at the Samsung stand with his Guitar Hero skills, the crowd seems to be growing minute by minute. People are begining to see that he is the player to beat at this years compitition. PJ and Patrick are keeping a low profile and scouting out their Singaporean opposition as they finish off their national finals today. more to come keep an eye out for some of the video footage from the stands today. Check out the rest of the post to see Massi4h struting his stuff. Another post to come after the Opening Ceremony tonight.

Friday Morning Day 1

Its Friday morning and the Asian Champs is now right on our doorsteps. The 9am bus ride to the Suntec Plaza the venue for the WCG Asian Championship means its an early rise for our intrepid team of Gamers. After a harsh rise and shine delivered by me at 8am the Gamers slowly rose and began to prepare for the first day of the event. We all picked up our gear and moved to the foodcourt located right next to the players village. Some of us grabed the local food while others went for McDonalds and Ice Milos, a must for anyone visiting Singapore. The Bus ride took us through some of the Singapore CityScape to the doorstep of the rather impressive venue for this weekends event. Following the Team registration to make sure that everyone has shirts and tags for the event. more to follow later today on the happinings here in Singapore.

The Team Arrives In Singapore

After 10 gruelling hours of flying with screaming babies and a limited range of entertainment options, we have arrived in Singapore, home of this years Asian championship. After the initial heatwave upon leaving the airport we were taken to our hotel to settle in and transform our area into the New Zealand HQ for the event. Complete with flags to complete the patriotic look. After a team briefing outlining how the event was set out everyone went their seperate ways to explore the surrounding area. The DOTA boys went and caught up with the australian team, their old rivals and chilled for the night with some of the other DOTA teams. The Costa Sands resort which serves as the players village is an interesting place at the moment teams from various nations all wandering around the place, checking out this and that, chatting with other teams, old friends and trying to avoid the torential downpour that welcomed us to the country. Wugga has settled in for some hard Virtua Fighter practice with Massi4h while the others have gone to explore our surroundings and see that they can find. Its all a very surreal experiance. Patrick and PJ have both went to find some food and settle into bed for what is going to prove to be an exciting day tomorrow.

Wugga having trained hard over the last months is feeling confident that he can perform to the best of his abilities while overseas and Massi4h is looking forward to his first international gaming event. Pablo is looking forward to taking all comers in NFS while PJ has faith in his epic FIFA skills. The team assembled at 9am at the airport luggage in hand ready to check in to the their flight at midday. NZ’s top video gamers take on Asia’s best

AUCKLAND 06 August 2008 – Nine of New Zealand’s top gamers are set to battle Asia’s best at the 2008 World Cyber Games Asian Championship in Singapore this weekend. Elite gamers from 14 countries across Asia Pacific will compete at the Suntec Singapore International Convention and Exhibition Centre on 9-10 August. The 2008 World Cyber Games (WCG) Asian Championship sees the top 140 gamers in the Asia Pacific region competing on video game titles such as Guitar Hero III (Xbox 360) and FIFA 2008 (PC).

“The NZ World Cyber Games qualifiers in July showcased some of New Zealand’s best gamers and we’re looking forward to competing against the best gamers in Asia Pacific.  The eblacks have been training non-stop for this world-class tournament and are more than ready to battle at the eSports equivalent to the Olympic Games.”  The eblacks will compete in a mix of console and PC games: Virtua Fighter 5 (Xbox 360), Guitar Hero III (Xbox 360), DOTA All-Stars (PC), Need for Speed: ProStreet (PC) and FIFA 2008 (PC).  The team comprises nine members, most of which will be competing in Singapore for the first time:

Official Debrief for 2008
2008 New Zealand Team
2008 New Zealand Team

Another event has finished and things are starting to settle after the large amount of work to deliver the event completes. This year’s event was a major success and seen improvements across the board with many feeling it was the best event we have ever delivered.

We would like to congratulate our entire list of prize winners, many of these will be heading to the Asian Championships in Singapore in August and many more in November to the Grand Final in Germany. We are working on providing up to date coverage and live results for our team overseas this year, this combined with the blog from PCWorld should give the best coverage of our overseas teams than ever before! Also check out the new eblacks.co.nz site which is a site dedicated to the teams we send overseas, this site is sponsor free and is a sign of respect and honor for our top e-sports players.

Today we will start the large task of sorting and uploading to the xLAN photo gallery photographs from the event, the TV articles and time-slip are already available on our youtube page with the team interviews being uploaded to it over the next fortnight.  The general event video will be available in just under two months and will post when this is available.

A big thank you to the team from Gamestah who worked very hard all weekend on a very tight timetable, they worked with our dedicated stage team to make one some of the best esports coverage seen in New Zealand. We hope to have more stages next year to even include some non gaming action so expect to see even further improvements in this area. This leads to a big thanks to all of xLAN crew who worked hard for the event duration and without them the event would not happen, we can only hope to have many of them help with next year to make it an even bigger and better success.

Lastly a big thanks our sponsors Samsung, TelstraClear, Xbox 306, ASUS and Demon Energy for their fantastic support his year and our partners PC World, The Edge and Playtech. Remember to support them as they make this event a possibility and without them we would not be able to send New Zealand’s best gamers to compete against the world.

Cheers,

Susan and Anthony

[WCGNZ] Event Crew Perspective

By Roxanne "e|usive" Bowden

Thinking back it was a weekend to remember. Events, tournaments, sponsors, stage matches, gaming clans from around New Zealand; WCG qualifiers… wow!

I remember waking up early Friday morning, grabbing a coffee and driving up to the event centre. If Friday was to be anything like the day before, I knew we’d be in for a crazy ride. I walked in through the main entry, entered the gaming hall. On my right, the stage, its equipment silent, sleeping, waiting. Directly ahead of me, a desk covered with name tags, and just beyond it, the dark hall awaiting its guests. Nothing but row upon row of tables and chairs, network cables, power adaptors. It really hit me at the moment just how much work was put into the setup. To think that just 2 days ago, this was nothing more than an empty hall.

I dumped my bag in the crew area, and proceeded to the entry hall, where gamers were already lining up, joking, laughing, doing the Mexican wave (yes you heard right). We opened the doors, and the event began! Over the next 2 hours, all I could see were name tags, lanyards, and a sea of faces. While each crew member has their own part to play during the event, the first couple of hours are critical. Every last crew member is there, handing out name tags, answering questions, helping gamers with their gear, making sure everyone has found a seat, has power and a working network connection. During those first hours, it really still strikes me how much that empty hall transforms.

The hard part finally over, on to the games! xLAN also hosts the New Zealand WCG qualifiers. Over the next couple of days, we’d be boasting tournaments not only for xLan, but for WCG and fun competitions as well! I turned on my pc, checked the roster for the Counter Strike 1.6 games, and proceeded to liaise with the rest of the game administrators. We picked up our walkie-talkies, worked out which teams we’d be refereeing for the first round, and the games began. From this point, for me, it was nothing but refereeing match after match, with a quick break for some lunch and dinner. But I didn’t care. Having come from a CS backround myself, there is nothing more exhilarating for me than to ref a game played by top NZ clans. Some of the rounds were intense! Some so close it was anybody’s guess who would win. I had no personal favourites though. When I wasn’t overseeing a WCG match I was helping admin the CS:Source scene. The rest of the event over those 2 days was a bit of a blur, there was just so much to do. The sponsors had their gear out for sale, the stage matches were drawing crowds. There was a even a Guitar Hero 2 match which drew much cheering and laughter. I know that behind the scenes, the crew were hard at work, each doing their own part. Fixing any issues, answering any questions, getting in the odd game themselves if they got a spare moment!

It all went by so fast, the next thing I knew, it was late Sunday afternoon. Prizes were being given out, WCG winners and qualifiers were being announced, and the gamers were leaving. It wasn’t over yet though. Now came the nasty bit. The bit your mother would do for you if you were at home: clean up. This is where I tip my hat to those who volunteer for crew. Many people don’t know it, but crew aren’t paid. They are volunteers. They spend their nights in the months leading up to the event preparing for it, from handing out flyers, testing servers and equipment. Right down to sharing jokes in a lounge while crimping cables, surrounded by wires, cuttings and lots of coffee. They spend 2 days before the actual event setting up all those stages and rows of network cables you see. That previous empty hallway is transformed by many hands, working together for free. Sunday night saw those same hands diligently putting away equipment, throwing out garbage, packing up tv’s and banners.

Why do we do it? For me, the answer is simple: gaming spirit. Crew are gamers. We want to see the event succeed, to see gamers having fun. This is what gaming events like this are all about. It’s never about the money. Anyone who’s ever spoken to the organisers, Susan and Anthony Baikie, know that they do not make a profit. It’s about the gamers. 2007 was the second year in a row I’d volunteered, and I’ll be doing it again this year, so see you all in 2008!
